…reinforces data-driven, climate-smart, and value-chain–oriented agricultural development

The Director of Dajrhas Health and Agric Development Ltd has successfully completed the Cochran Fellowship Programme organized by the United States Department of Agriculture – Foreign Agricultural Service (USDA-FAS), following an intensive professional and institutional engagement in the United States.

The fellowship, held in October 2022 with activities spanning daily sessions from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. (local time), brought together senior professionals and policymakers from across the globe for a rigorous capacity-building programme focused on agriculture, food systems, and policy leadership. Key activities were conducted in Wisconsin, United States, alongside visits to leading agricultural institutions and field sites.

The Cochran Fellowship Programme is a highly competitive international initiative designed to strengthen technical expertise, institutional leadership, and policy-relevant knowledge in agriculture and food systems. The programme integrates expert-led classroom discussions, institutional briefings, and hands-on field learning, exposing Fellows to advanced agricultural production systems, agribusiness models, climate-smart practices, post-harvest management solutions, and food system governance frameworks.

During the programme, emphasis was placed on data-driven and evidence-based decision-making as the foundation for effective agricultural policy formulation and programme implementation. Sessions highlighted how agricultural investments in advanced economies are guided by robust data systems, performance monitoring tools, and adaptive management frameworks, positioning data and analytics as core institutional infrastructure.

The fellowship also underscored the importance of coordinated value-chain systems. Interactions with producers, processors, logistics operators, research institutions, and regulatory agencies demonstrated how strong vertical and horizontal linkages can significantly reduce post-harvest losses, improve efficiency, and enhance overall food system resilience.

In addition, discussions on climate-smart agriculture and sustainability illustrated that environmental outcomes are most effective when embedded within market and policy frameworks. Emissions measurement, resource-use efficiency, and environmental performance standards were shown to be closely aligned with regulatory systems, financing mechanisms, and accountability structures, offering scalable models for climate adaptation and mitigation.

Speaking on the significance of the programme, the Director noted that the fellowship provided “practical institutional insights that reinforce the role of systems thinking, data integrity, and coordinated markets in building resilient and competitive agricultural economies.”

The experience and institutional exposure gained through the Cochran Fellowship are expected to further strengthen Dajrhas’ capacity to deliver high-quality research, policy advisory services, and development interventions. Lessons from the programme will inform the organization’s ongoing and future work in agricultural systems analysis, climate resilience, food loss reduction, and data-enabled decision support.

This international engagement reflects Dajrhas’ commitment to continuous learning, global best practices, and the delivery of locally relevant, globally informed solutions that advance sustainable agriculture and development outcomes in Nigeria and beyond.
